Unlike loans, grants do not have to be repaid. And they are easier to get than scholarships, which usually are based on merit. For many minority students, like African Americans, attending college would be virtually impossible due to economic hardship.
The cost of attending a private college averages about $20,000 a year, according to current information. Community and public colleges are not much less expensive. Thanks to the many federal, state, and other funded programs, an African American student can find many sources of college grant money. Many private and public colleges and universities have their own college financial aid. Students can easily access financial aid information online or from their high school counselors. To apply for college grant money, students must first complete the annual FAFSA form, which determines their need. Many documents and papers must be completed by the student, with the help of parents, high school counselors, and the college financial aid department. Students in the last year of high school should prepare by researching the matter and seeking assistance from his counselor. Taking the appropriate college entrance examinations are also very important.
