Disabled Students’ Allowance

Disabled Students' Allowances are grants to help meet the extra costs of studying that students face, as a direct result of a disability or specific learning difficulty.

They are designed to help disabled students study on an equal basis with other students.

The allowances are paid on top of the standard student finance package and the amount you can get does not depend on your household income. The allowances do not have to be repaid.

The grant can be used to provide specialist equipment you need for studying, for example computer software, to provide a non-medical helper such as a note-taker or reader, or to cover extra travel costs you have to pay due to your disability.

In the UK, there is the Disabled Students Allowance or DSA that the government grants to students with disabilities. This is a program for students in higher education. This program was established by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in the United Kingdom. It is meant to help students with disabilities cope with learning in an environment that is challenging to them. Financial and equipment support is given if a student passes the assessment procedure. This program is available to students in England and Wales. Northern Ireland and Scotland have a similar program.

Housing Grants for Women

While discussing housing grants for disabled women, and housing grants for single women who live below the Federal Poverty Guidelines, one must bear in mind that the Federal Govt. does not provide personal grants to individuals. The govt. disburses the grant money to state governments and non-profits, who in turn use the funds to provide financial assistance to women. The government provides housing assistance for low income families. Single women, whose gross annual household income is less than 80% of the median income of the county where they are residing, are eligible for rental and housing assistance.

Housing Choice Voucher Program
The Federal Government's Housing Choice Voucher Program is meant for low-income households who would like to choose their own accommodation. This program helps women look for single-family homes or townhouses of their choice and use the voucher to pay for all or part of the rent. The vouchers, that are disbursed by public housing agencies (PHAs), may also be used to buy a home provided the house meets the PHA stamp of approval.

Private Subsidized Homes
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides rental assistance to low income families and people with disabilities, by allowing them the option of staying in privately owned subsidized houses. Property owners, who own and operate these homes, are eligible to receive subsidies from the govt. so that they can provide subsidized apartments to low-income families. In case of privately owned subsidized homes, both for-profit and non-profit entities are eligible to receive subsidies. Public Housing
The HUD also indirectly maintains public housing units by administering Federal aid to local housing agencies (HAs). These services are designed for people with serious mental illness, chronic substance abuse problems, AIDS and related diseases, to ensure that people with the aforementioned disabilities do not reside in places unfit for human habitation. Disabled women, who are able to pay up to 30 percent of their monthly adjusted income for rent, are eligible for housing assistance under the Shelter Plus Care Program. 

In addition to the aforementioned housing grants for women, grants like Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) that are Federally funded and implemented at the state, tribal, and insular area levels ensure that women whose annual household income is less than the stated minimum are not forced to spend a chunk of their income on energy bills and weatherization respectively.

Social Security is a government agency that can provide financial help.

If a persons disability is severe enough that it is preventing them from carrying out their job responsibilities they may be eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits or Supplemental Security Income. Both provide monthly cash benefits.
The local Department of Family Service can provide emergency food and medical assistance.

In the United States, approximately 50 million people have physical or mental disabilities or impairments that substantially limit major life activities. Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 3-in-10 chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age.

One misconception about Social Security Disability is that a persons application is always denied the first time. This is untrue, the Social Security Administration has no policy, formula, or regulation that automatically denies every first application for benefits.

If a claim is denied there is legal help available. Make sure to file an appeal immediately and contact an attorney that deals with disability claim denials.
Avoid any online agencies claiming to provide benefits to the disabled for a fee. Never pay money to receive benefits. This is a scam.

Although there are grants for the disabled few people are aware of them, and fewer know where to find them. Disabled individuals should contact the National Council of State Agencies to learn more about down payment housing grants that are available in each state.

Not every state offers down payment grant programs. For example, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority offers mortgage loan programs as well as closing cost and down payment assistance for low to moderately low income families. A neighboring state may not.

The Home Choice Down Payment Assistance Loan is given to disabled participants who fall below 80 percent of the area median income. This loan or grant will eliminate or reduce a client's down payment on a home.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) federal housing program can help moderate or low-income families with disabilities to buy or rent a home. Section 8 offers subsidies for both renters and homeowners. Approved recipients will have help paying all or part of their monthly mortgage payment.


One in every three disabled Americans is living at or below the poverty level; some are homeless while others are living in horrible conditions. Disabled World is a caring organization that helps the disabled find government down payment grants and mortgage assistance programs.

Pursuing a higher-education degree can be quite costly, and many students are unable to pay for full tuition and other expenses up-front. Fortunately, many resources exist to help you secure financial aid, thereby reducing the cost of your education and/or allowing you to pay for it over time.

Explore every opportunity for financial aid! This article primarily addresses federal aid programs, but you may also be able to get financial assistance from your state government, your school, or a private scholarship. You can also apply for private student loans from companies such as Sallie Mae or from your local bank.

Federal Student Financial Aid

The United States government provides need-based financial assistance through the Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid. Federal student aid covers school expenses such as tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation. This aid can also help you pay for a computer and dependent childcare expenses.

There are three categories of federal student aid: grants, work-study, and loans.

Grants: A federal grant is an award of financial assistance from a federal agency to a recipient to carry out a public purpose of support or stimulation authorized by a law of the United States. Federal grants are not federal assistance or loans to individuals; they do not need to be repaid. Click here for a list of grant programs available for eligible students pursuing a postsecondary education. Grants.gov is another useful resource for locating grant opportunities.

Teach Grant Program: Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program, which provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. Read more about the TEACH Grant Program, and contact the financial aid office at the college where you will be enrolled if you are interested in learning more.

Work-Study: This form of assistance provides jobs to undergraduate and graduate students, allowing them to earn money to pay for education expenses while enrolled in school. 

Loans: Loans are borrowed money that must be repaid with interest. Federal loan programs include Stafford loans, PLUS loans, and Perkins loans.

With this support, my son was able to cycle back from school with his friends, join us for a family meal in the kitchen and experience the exhilaration of wheelchair abseiling.
His new wheelchair funded by one of the charities on this site not only increased his independence and mobility but also his street cred - Absolutely essential for a teenager!
