In the UK, there is the Disabled Students Allowance or DSA that the government grants to students with disabilities. This is a program for students in higher education. Handicapped students will have to go through a disabled student assessment before they can benefit from this program. Benefits of this program include financial and equipment support for students who have mental, physical, or learning disabilities.

This program was established by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in the United Kingdom. It is meant to help students with disabilities cope with learning in an environment that is challenging to them. Financial and equipment support is given if a student passes the assessment procedure. This program is available to students in England and Wales. Northern Ireland and Scotland have a similar program.

Students with disabilities or learning difficulties such as dyslexia can also benefit from financial aid that is meant to be used to cover additional expenses.

These additional requirements can take the form of equipment, sign language translator, or a civilian helper. It is also meant to serve as a general allowance to be used where the student feels it is necessary to enable them to study well.

The allowance is intended to help students learn on an equal basis with fellow students who do not have physical or learning disabilities. A postgraduate, full-time, or part-time student can benefit from this aid. Sometimes travel expenses for disabled students can also be covered by this program. Equipment aid can take the form of ergonomic gadgets, computer software programs, or recorders.

When it comes to non-medical aid or human support such as sign language or note taking, an allowance is provided to pay for the services of these people. Other needs such as internet connection, reading materials, school supplies and even photocopying can also be covered under this program. Proof of disability will have to be provided to avail of these benefits.

A student also has to pass an evaluation or assessment from a DSA assessment office. His eligibility and the amount of assistance to be received may also depend on his type of disability. A written statement or record from a medical doctor or educational psychologist will also be required as part of the application and evaluation. All these will be submitted to the funding body for evaluation.

Applicants must be over the age of 16 and ready to enroll in college or higher learning courses. Additional requests for laptops or special software program may be approved for special cases concerning learning disabilities such as dyslexia. If you are interested in applying for disability assistance, your school should be able to get you in touch with the appropriate personnel or with a representative of the DSA.

You will be given an application form which you will submit with other requirements such as your medical records or proof of disability from your doctor. After your application is reviewed, the funding body will either approve or reject the next step which is a disabled student assessment at an accredited centre.
